The Princess Royal Centre provides multi-use educational facilities for further education, allowing Guernsey islanders to train in a fully functioning theatre.
PBA overcame a number of challenges to deliver the building which consists of four zones including a three storey central auditorium and a double height entrance foyer.
The zones were originally meant to be interconnected, but the multiple changes in floor level and irregular geometry of the building significantly reduced the ability to load share lateral forces between each zone.
To mitigate secondary sway effects, PBA ensured each zone was designed with multiple sets of orthogonal braced bays. Other technical challenges included coordinating and designing the structure to support the retractable seating balconies, lighting and sound equipment and the raking auditorium/foyer wall.
