Since 2002, PBA has worked closely with the University of Cambridge to create an affordable, sustainable transport strategy for the new North West Cambridge development in a place where there is a highly-congested, under-invested transport network.
We advised on the transport aspects of the masterplan to enable the walking, cycling and public transport strategy, and created an appropriate car parking strategy supported with effective alternative travel demand management measures to reduce the impact of cars on the development. This development transport strategy was aligned with the wider transport strategy for Cambridge, and promoted the existing highway network capacity being used most effectively and efficiently.
Following the granting of outline planning permission in 2013, PBA is proud to have continued our involvement in this scheme resolving all transport issues arising from the rapid delivery of the development to our client’s tight programme.
In addition to the transport strategy, PBA’s civils and structural teams have been involved in Phase One of the development providing design services for the build of much-needed key worker housing for postgraduate researchers to live. The new flats are designed to meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5 and to blend in with the existing architecture of Cambridge city centre.
External steel framed walkways have also been designed by PBA to provide the main access routes to the new five-storey buildings, and our civils team delivered the below ground drainage design as well as external works design for hardstanding areas.
The development is under construction and Phase One is due to complete in 2017.
