PBA was appointed to this project by the City of London Corporation, through the Homes England Framework for their Schools and Housing Expansion Programme. The Corporation’s strategic aim is to provide access to excellent education and learning opportunities within and beyond the Square Mile.
PBA is currently working on the proposed City of London Primary Academy Islington development, on the fringes of the iconic Golden Lane Estate. The scheme consists of a new three-storey, two-form entry primary school and residential tower on a brownfield site. The school will include a nursery, separate sports hall and kitchen facility.
A fourteen-storey residential tower will provide 66 social housing units. The site is located within both the London Borough of Islington and City of London. Constraints of the scheme include its proximity to the grade II listed Golden Lane Estate, and the St. Luke’s Conservation Area, which therefore requires the proposed development to be compatible to its surroundings.
To create value opportunities and savings in both cost and programme, detailed benchmarking and option appraisals for optimal cost effective solutions and alternative forms of construction have been considered.
The school and residential blocks have been separated to allow flexible alternatives between both phased and concurrent construction, as well as clear delineation of funding elements.
Planning for the scheme was granted in March 2018. PBA has also been appointed by the main contractor ISG to provide integrated engineering services to construction. The project is designed to BIM Level 2 and construction is due to commence in early 2019.
