PBA climbs the ranks of UK environmental consultancies

9 February 2018

LONDON – PBA has been ranked 24 in a list of the UK’s top 30 environmental consultancies compiled by Environment Analyst. This represents a steady climb of 19 places from our earlier ranking of 43 in 2013/14.

The latest report from business intelligence and market research firm Environment Analyst finds that the UK environmental consultancy (EC) market grew by 6.3% in 2016 to reach £1.65bn, outstripping the nation’s economic growth of 1.8% by a significant margin. The report is based on the financial statistics and detailed company profiles of the leading peer group of thirty EC practices in the UK, as well as Environment Analyst’s wider annual company survey results from 2016.

This is the sixth consecutive year of growth following a slow post-recession recovery period, buoyed by strong demand associated with infrastructure and development activities - across the housing, transport, energy and flood defence sectors in particular - and a sustained recovery in public sector consulting work following several years of decline associated with government department austerity budgeting.

PBA was one of eight new entries into the Top 30 and analysis showed that alignment to the buoyant property and development sectors helped the Practice surpass the milestone of £10m UK EC revenues required to enter EA’s Top 30. It has been recognised that PBA has demonstrated a consistent performance, thanks to our strong capabilities in EIA services and wider planning business roots in housing and development.

Based on the service area breakdown of the UK Top 30's aggregated UK EC revenues, Environment Analyst found that four core EC disciplines continue to make up over half of the UK sector: environmental impact assessment (EIA) and sustainable development (17.9%); contaminated land/remediation (14.0%); and ecological/landscape services (13.0%) and water quality and resource management (13.0%).

Commenting on the announcement, Elaine Richmond, PBA Environmental Director said:

“We are very pleased with the findings from Environmental Analyst. PBA has always had a strong EC offering, providing trusted advice and value in each of the four core disciplines identified by the report. Our place among the top 30 UK consultancies is proof that the experience and quality that PBA can provide is being recognised by the industry and by clients.”
