PBA provided an innovative engineering solution to secure a development project for the Penrhyn Road Campus of Kingston University.
The new John Galsworthy Building at the centre of Kingston University’s Penrhyn Road campus is phase three of a strategic plan to create lecture theatres, classrooms, offices, social spaces, IT areas and canteen facilities. Both the university and the local community will benefit from the creation of an open courtyard at the centre of the campus providing a central social area.
PBA was commissioned by Dean & Dyball Construction Ltd to provide structural and civil engineering services. Various options for the structure were considered in terms of both span and structural material. The use of comparatively thin post-tensioned (PT) floor slabs was selected for a number of reasons including cost, ease of services distribution, and the desire to minimise the building height, thereby reducing the visual impact on the surrounding buildings & local community and allowing for large column free spaces.
