Elthorne Park High School is a high-performing London school that has increased exam success rates in recent years. Demand for places has led to a proposal for a new supplementary building to increase capacity from 900 students to approximately 1,200.
PBA was appointed as lead engineering consultant with responsibility for developing the scheme and facilitating an effective transmission from planning stages through to construction.
The scheme faced a number of time constraints given the schools current oversubscription, as such the design team engaged the use of BIM to assist in detailed co-ordination and provide time savings associated with the programme. PBA completed M&E, architectural, civil and structural coordination using a sharing and exchange of BIM models with effective team working enabling the use of off-site construction techniques. Through this process, Balfour Beatty was able to identify programme savings associated with off-site manufacture. Developing this model was more than a construction tool and employing its ability to help the client visualise internal spaces through 3D renders and walkthroughs became a powerful communication tool with laymen stakeholders. The scheme is designed to achieve BREEAM New Construction 2014 ‘Very Good’ with a focus on delivery of low carbon building services, addressing external acoustic parameters while maintaining an internal environment.
The implementation of BIM and a collaborative approach were instrumental in the success of the project.
"PBA has provided the MEP, structural and civil design services for the Elthorne Park High School. They have shown great commitment to the project and delivered a high quality service. They have been proactive in their approach and took a collaborative route to develop the design in consultation with wider stakeholders.
PBA has a great team who are very skilled in their respective fields and are always ready to challenge themselves to bring efficiency and design benefits to the project by innovation and out of the box thinking.
We would definitely want to work with PBA in future and build on our working relationship."
