Autonomous vehicles are just one part of our sustainable transport future.
Rob McDonald, Director of Intelligent Transport Services 24 Mar 2016
Rob McDonald is the Director responsible for PBA’s Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) service offering.
A transport engineer with 24 years of wide and varied experience, Rob began his career in the specification and implementation of urban traffic control systems before moving into more general transport planning and highway engineering, often taking the lead on transport work for major land development projects. It was during this time that Rob undertook a masters in transport planning.
Having gained a wider understanding of transport, Rob chose to specialise in ITS, developing PBA’s offering through projects like the Reading Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), where he worked closely with a Reading Borough Council counterpart to manage the delivery of a £4.8m package of ITS measures. He also created opportunities in Europe and has both led and supported a range of leading research and knowledge exchange projects around ITS, open data and sustainable travel.
Having established a strong ITS delivery team, Rob‘s interest lies in developing opportunities to improve PBA’s services around the future of transport. This includes assembling strong, collaborative bidding teams around the internet of things and visualising the potential for the integration of transport, energy and assisted living to meet the public sector challenges of tomorrow. Rob is also uniting his understanding of ITS and land development to create innovative transport strategies for major schemes. These will be managed and monitored over their 15 to 20 year development horizons to ensure they maximise any potentially disruptive changes, including big data, autonomous vehicles, the sharing economy, mobility as a service and working patterns.
